Dr Chok Chan on locuming as an RMO
Locuming as a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) offers significant benefits. It allows RMOs to choose when and where they work, which is ideal for balancing personal commitments and professional development. Locuming exposes RMOs to a variety of clinical environments, broadening their experience and enhancing their CV. It also opens up opportunities for higher pay rates compared to some permanent positions.
We met with RMO Dr Chok Chan, who has been locuming in Australia to chat about his experiences.
When Chok decided to start his locum career, he reached out to Medrecruit. "I chose to get involved with Medrecruit because it was a very good company. It was a very straightforward process in terms of getting recruited and finding a job here in Australia to locum."
Many junior doctors choose to locum because it allows them to travel the country and experience different hospitals and ways of working in medicine.
I wanted to find out a little bit more about the Australian health care system , then work here a bit, and also see a bit more of Australia. Medrecruit helped me achieve this.
Working with an agency streamlines the administrative aspects, from credential verification to contract negotiation, freeing you to focus on gaining clinical experience. This setup is perfect for junior doctors looking to expand their network, explore different medical practices, and achieve a balanced work-life integration while advancing their careers.
"We do the process together, and we can fill in all the paperwork together.
Looking ahead, Chok says: "My goal for next year is to start my training in internal medicine, and I have got a registrar job lined up, but before that, I would really like to travel around (maybe explore Europe a bit before starting)."
In Australia, doctors can begin locuming in PGY-2, and in New Zealand in PGY-3. The transition to locum roles can be a significant opportunity for RMO doctors. Locum work offers a flexible approach to medical practice, allowing you to explore various healthcare settings. If you would like to learn more about locuming as a junior doctor, we can help.
