Going from a Registrar to a Consultant is an exciting transition that offers so many benefits.

Increased earning potential

In Australia, a Senior Doctor’s salary is in the top 10% of earners. In New Zealand, specialists can expect to earn four times the median income. Working as a full-time Specialist gives you a great pay increase and could have you earning between $2,500 and $3,000 per day in Australia, or between $1,500 and $2,000 per day in New Zealand. That's earning potential of $360,000 in just six months! These day rates are relatively similar across all states and territories, however, there may be some variation depending on your specialty. You'll have more opportunities available to you and can choose shifts to suit your needs and lifestyle.

Be in demand

Consultants are in high demand, especially across specialties such as Emergency Medicine, Anaesthetics, General Surgery, and Psychiatry. Additionally, General Practice and Internal Medicine are in high demand in New Zealand. By being in demand, you have more options and can pick and choose an opportunity that best suits you. Locum to travel and experience different parts of the country, or discover a permanent position that will give you more freedoms.

Thrive as a new consultant

Considering your own wellbeing is an important step to thriving in your new role. Be sure to take time to maintain your relationships with friends and family, and tend to your own mental and physical health. Locuming is a great way to schedule yourself more time as you can choose when you work, how long for, and where in the country you'll travel to.
