Does Australia accept foreign doctors?

If you are an international doctor living in New Zealand but looking to live and work in Australia - the good news is that Australia does accept foreign doctors. International medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to work as a doctor in Australia need to have their international medical qualifications verified by the Australian Medical Association before they will be able to practice.

Your pathway to medical registration in Australia will depend on your individual circumstances, such as where you completed your primary medical degree, the countries in which you have clinical experience, and if you’re a specialist or junior doctor.

To practice in Australia, you must be registered with AHPRA. For IMGs, this is achievable via a number of pathways (or routes), your eligibility for which is determined by your clinical background.
