Dr Huw John is an Anaesthetic doctor about to finish his training at the Sunshine Coast, he is also a Medrecruit locum. We caught up with him to have a chat about locuming with Medrecruit and what his plans are for 2023.
I have been working with Medrecruit since 2016, when I started to do a bit of locum work interspersed with my training and I have been typically picking up some shifts here and there on weekends or during holidays to fund some of my travels.
One of the things I like about locum work is that I can pick up shifts on my weekends and my days off from my regular job and it allows me to travel to new places and new environments, so it’s good for my lifestyle.
It enriches my lifestyle because I enjoy travelling and seeing new places, and I also think it is good for my work as a doctor to be able to work in different environments and new hospitals as it improves my medical abilities.
So I think over the course of my training and including the locum work that I’ve done, I must have worked in 20 -25 different hospitals so it really gives a good kind of picture of what work in different environments is like. I genuinely think that makes you a better doctor to not work in the same place all the time.
I have just come to the end of my anesthetic training so I am hoping to do a bit of travel, do some locuming around Australia, and spend some time overseas and do some medicine overseas.
One thing I like about working for Medrecruit in 2023, is that I will be able to pick up some locum shifts in various different areas of Australia (that I want to go to anyway) so it's a good way of funding my travels as well as visiting new places that are interesting to me anyway.
Coming to the end of my training and not having a permanent position for next year Medrecruit is going to allow me to pick up work when I want and where I want. It will allow me to see parts of Australia that I really want to visit and really enjoy the next year.
