Fast-track registration to Australia opens for O&G, Psychiatry, and Anaesthetics specialists
If you're trained in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, or Anaesthetics in the United Kingdom or Ireland, you may now be eligible for a new Expedited Specialist Pathway — a streamlined process that can get you registered and working in Australia faster than ever before.
What’s changed?
Historically, international specialists faced a longer assessment process to gain registration in Australia. But recent changes from the Medical Board of Australia and AHPRA mean certain overseas qualifications are now recognised as equivalent to those awarded in Australia.
That means if you meet the criteria, you can bypass the standard assessment and apply directly for specialist registration.

How does the pathway work?
This new pathway is based on a pre-approved list of international qualifications, reviewed by Australia’s medical colleges, assessed by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), and approved by the Medical Board of Australia. It’s a major step forward for international medical graduates seeking to work in Australia.
The pathway also opened to eligible GPs in October 2024 and more specialties are in the pipeline.
Next on the list are:
- Diagnostic Radiology
- General Medicine
- General Paediatrics
The qualifications assessment process for these specialties is set to begin in 2025.
