Fast-track registration to NZ for GPs and Family Medicine Specialists from USA, Canada, & Singapore

There’s good news for overseas-trained general practitioners and Family Medicine specialists, New Zealand has launched a new fast-track registration process for GPs from the USA, Canada, and Singapore.

In collaboration with the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) has streamlined the VOC3 pathway, significantly reducing processing times for eligible GPs applying for provisional vocational registration in general practice.

Previously, the assessment process could take several months. Now, complete applications from doctors who have completed their specialist GP (Family Medicine) training in the USA, Canada, or Singapore will be processed in as little as two months.

Why this matters

This initiative is designed to address urgent workforce needs and ease pressure on general practices across the country. MCNZ Chair Dr Rachelle Love noted that the move “will get qualified doctors into communities that need them, faster.”

With this update, New Zealand strengthens its position as a welcoming and efficient destination for international GPs, offering a high quality of life, supportive healthcare systems, and a clear, timely registration process.

Who is eligible?

Doctors applying via the VOC3 pathway must:

  • Hold a recognised specialist GP (Family Medicine) qualification from the USA, Canada, or Singapore
  • Have a job offer in New Zealand in general practice
  • Meet the standard requirements around recency of practice, references, and fitness to practise
