Chile, Luxembourg, and Croatia added to MCNZ’s Comparable Health Systems
Chile, Luxembourg, and the Republic of Croatia have now joined the Medical Council of New Zealand’s (MCNZ) list of Comparable Health System countries, making it easier for doctors trained in these countries to work in New Zealand.
This update follows the recent addition of Japan and South Korea in February 2025 and is another step forward in widening the pathways for international medical graduates to practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
What this means for doctors from Chile, Luxembourg, and Croatia
Doctors who have trained and gained experience in Chile, Luxembourg, or Croatia can now use this background to support an application for provisional general registration in New Zealand via the Comparable Health System pathway. This makes the process of gaining registration and starting work in New Zealand significantly more streamlined for eligible applicants.
The appeal of New Zealand for International Medical Graduates
New Zealand remains an appealing destination for doctors seeking a better work-life balance, professional growth, and a healthcare system that values patient-centred care. Whether you’re drawn to the lifestyle, the career development opportunities, or the chance to experience medicine in a new cultural setting, this new change makes the move more accessible.
What are the requirements?
The Comparable Health System pathway is designed for doctors who are eligible for provisional general registration. To qualify, doctors must meet several key requirements, including:
- At least 33 out of the last 48 months spent working full time (20+ hours/week) in one area of medicine in a recognised Comparable Health System country
- A medical degree listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS)
- A job offer from a NZ hospital in a job which is at the same level and in the same area of medicine as the experience in a Comparable Healthcare System
- Meeting English language requirements
- Strong references and employer support for supervision
