Frequently Asked Questions
Will working as a locum affect my tax status?

Yes, working as a locum means you are essentially a contractor. Your tax structure will be different. In Australia, you will need to provide an Australian Business Number. In New Zealand, you may need to register for GST

What is MCNZ Registration?

To practise medicine in New Zealand you must have Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) Registration.

Are accommodation and travel costs covered?

Yes! Most locum placements offer travel and accommodation arrangements. We can help negotiate this for you. This is usually hospital accommodation or a nice bed and breakfast, and flight or petrol reimbursement.

What paperwork will I need to apply for roles?

Your registration number, a current CV and three references are the essentials of any job application. Other paperwork that's commonly required is:

  • Evidence of vaccinations,
  • Evidence of your degree/fellowship,
  • Annual Practicing Certificates,
  • Indemnity,
  • A certified copy of your passport and/or driver’s licence,
  • Police vetting form.

What you'll need can vary slightly between Australian states and in New Zealand. Some states/locations also ask you complete an online training course (eMedical Courses). We're here to help guide you through the requirements and we'll give you a checklist detailing everything you need.

How long does it take to find work?

This depends on what kind of work you’d like to do and what your specialty and/or experience is. The more flexible you are on where, when and what kind of work you’d like to do, the quicker you can start. Once we have your credentialing sorted, you can (almost) start right away.

Alternatively, you can be really picky – it’s up to you! Tell your Solutions Specialist what your perfect role looks like and they’ll be able to advise you what’s possible and will contact you as soon the right one becomes available.
