The GP market in Australia

General Practitioners (GPs) remain in high demand across Australia, with urgent need for consultants and registrars in rural, remote, and outer-metropolitan areas. Workforce shortages and population growth continue to drive the demand, making now an ideal time to explore new opportunities.

In 2025, GPs in Australia typically earn between AUD $100,000 and $300,000+ annually, depending on experience, billing model (e.g. mixed/private), and patient load. GPs working in rural hospitals or remote locations can earn significantly more—between AUD $150,000 and $350,000+ annually. Practice owners and those working in Distribution Priority Areas (DPAs) often exceed this range.

Locum GPs are also in strong demand, earning between AUD $1,800 and $3,000 per day, particularly in rural hospital settings or locations with critical workforce shortages. Australia offers an exceptional lifestyle for GPs—combining professional autonomy, career flexibility, and access to some of the world’s most liveable regions. We also support placements for GP registrars looking to gain experience or meet training requirements in high-need areas.

FAQs

Your registration number, a current CV and three references are the essentials of any job application. Other paperwork that's commonly required is:

  • Evidence of vaccinations,
  • Evidence of your degree/fellowship,
  • Annual Practicing Certificates,
  • Indemnity,
  • A certified copy of your passport and/or driver’s licence,
  • Police vetting form.

What you'll need can vary slightly between Australian states and New Zealand. Some states/locations also require you to complete an online training course (eMedical Courses). We're here to help guide you through the requirements, and we'll give you a checklist detailing everything you need.

No, our service is free for doctors! We're paid by hospitals and clinics for our services and are preferred suppliers in several states and areas. Because we have a huge network of doctors, we save clinics and hospitals time (and money) by taking the stress out of the hiring and credentialing process.

Our Specialist General Practice team can help you find roles in these subspecialties:

  • GP, Emergency Medicine
  • Sexual Health
  • Family Planning
  • GP, Procedural Obstetrics
  • Correctional Health
  • GP, Minor Surgery
  • Indigenous Medicine (Aboriginal Medical Services)
  • Corporate Health
  • GP, Anaesthetics

In 2025, General Practitioners in Australia can earn between AUD$100,000 and $300,000 a year, (for a 40-hour week). Specialist GPs and those who own private practices can earn more than AUD$300,000. Rural hospital GPs in Australia can expect to earn between AUD$150,000 - $350,000+.

The annual salary range for GPs in New Zealand is NZD$160,000 - $250,000.

This depends on where you work – the hospital or clinic chooses how a doctor is paid. This will work one of three ways:

  • You’re paid by the hospital/clinic as an employee
  • You’re paid by the hospital/clinic as a contractor
  • Medrecruit pays you directly (this can be as a casual employee of Medrecruit or via your company)

Your recruitment specialist can tell you which method you’ll be paid for each job you undertake.
