Job Description:

Employment Type: Permanent Full-Time (part-time or locum options negotiable)

Salary: NZD $180,000 - $300,000, with relocation support and CME leave available 

Suitable for international doctors - Supervision and visa support can be provided


About the Role

Palmerston North Hospital is seeking a vibrant and experienced Emergency Medicine Consultant to join its dynamic and diverse Emergency Department team. The successful candidate will work alongside 11 Emergency Physicians, 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists, and 2 Nurse Practitioners, and will supervise 18 resident medical officers and 6th-year medical students from the University of Otago 


Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing high-quality emergency care across adult and paediatric presentations
  • Leading trauma and resuscitation efforts in a busy regional trauma centre
  • Participating in teaching, supervision, and professional development programs
  • Contributing to the development of trauma and disaster protocols in collaboration with surgical and anaesthetic teams
  • Supporting continuous improvement and clinical governance initiatives

About the Emergency Department

  • Annual presentations: ~48,000 patients
  • Admission rate: ~30%
  • Trauma workload: Higher than average due to agricultural injuries and road accidents
  • Level: Australasian Level 4 ED and regional trauma centre
  • Training: Strong teaching program for ACEM Part I, with plans to expand Part II support 1
